Who are the Prime Timers of Baltimore?
Prime Timers of Baltimore was officially formed on April 1, 1997. We had previously been a part of a joint Baltimore/Washington DC chapter. Members of all Prime Timer chapters as well as Independents are welcome to attend any Prime Timer chapter meetings or activities, Whether it is located in the city next door or on the other side of the world.
Prime Timers are mature gay or bisexual men and the men who admire them. Our members are men who choose to have their social lives enriched by the diverse activities in which our members engage. No single definition can describe Prime Timers, as they come from all walks of life. We involve ourselves individually in our communities with politics, volunteerism, gay issues, the arts, entertainment, and every other facet of healthy living. Some are fathers, and some are care givers. Some are businessmen and entrepreneurs. Some are workers; some are retirees. Some of us are always on the go, and some enjoy the quiet company of others at home. One thing is true of all of us in Prime Timers: we enjoy the opportunities and friendships that develop with other Prime Timers throughout the world.
We try to keep our calendar filled with events that provide Baltimore with a place where Mature Gay/Bisexual men and their admirers can meet for fun in a relaxed, friendly atmosphere. As with any social club, the quality of the group is determined by nothing more than the active and enthusiastic involvement of its members. We encourage new ideas from our members to ensure growth and prosperity. A good example of our activities includes backyard cookouts hosted by one of our members and usually held on a holiday weekend. Steve Charing of Baltimore OUTloud wrote an excellent article describing a recent cookout. Click on Baltimore OUTloud Article to view this interesting and informative article.
We hope you will join us and make Prime Timers a great time for everyone! If your not close enough to join our chapter then checkout Prime Timers Independent membership. Go to Prime Timers Worldwide Website and click on the Independents page.
Our Meeting Social
We usually have our monthly general meetings at St. Mark's Lutheran Church located at 1900 St. Paul Street, which is between 21st Street and North Avenue in Baltimore. Parking is readily available and St. Mark's is handicap accessible. We are not a religious affiliate of St. Mark's Church, they extend us kindness in the use of their Lehr Hall. When we meet at St. Mark's, it is usually on the second Sunday of every month at 6 PM. Of course, we sometimes move our meetings to other venues for a change of pace. We serve a potluck dinner or light snacks after our business meeting. Sometimes we have a special guest speaker of interest to members when at St. Mark's, and sometimes we have board games instead.
What We Enjoy?
We have a Calendar of Events that you can view to see events which our members may attend with others in a group such as: opera, music performance, lectures, plays, and movies in theaters or in a member's home. One event which some find entertaining is karaoke. Some of our members sing around the Baltimore area at various venues. We have very talented members from a musical to theatrical standpoints. One of our members performs with the Harrisburg Symphony. You may even catch one of us performing in a local play or musical. We have members who are experts in Maryland, United States and World History. If your interested in Royal Geneaology, we have someone who would be glad to discuss it with you. If you want to learn how to play Bridge, 500 or any other card games we have men who will show you what you need to know. We have board game players from "Aggravation" to "Yahtzee." You see, we are not limited by just a few talented members. They bring with them their professional lives too. Come to one of our meetings or events and get to know everyone. As you can see, we have varied interests and hobbies. We truly like to have fun! If this sounds interesting and you want to know more about us email at PTBalto Info or visit our calendar of events and learn where we will be soon.
Who are Prime Timers?
Prime Timers was founded in 1987 by a retired professor, Woody Baldwin (for more information about Woody, please visit his website here). He felt a wide gap existed in today's society, which caters almost exclusively to youth. This worship of eternal youth is never more flagrant than in the gay culture. Woody began the Boston Chapter by placing ads in local newspapers and soliciting his many friends. He expected only a small handful of men to attend the first meeting and was surprised when over 40 showed up. This indicated to Woody a need for social and cultural organizations to aid and support the aging gay and bisexual man. Now this organization has grown to over forty chapters worldwide, located throughout North America, Europe and Australia.
Travel opportunities for members are vast. Individual chapters welcome the chance to meet visitors from other chapters. Letters asking for local information and recommendations will be well received and promptly answered. Chapters enjoy showing off their communities and having visitors come away with a feeling of kinship and brotherhood with their newfound friends. The Prime Timers Worldwide Convention is held to discuss business and attend workshops geared toward Prime Timers. Our Conventions have been in Vancouver BC, Dallas TX, and Washington D.C., and more. And each year during Mardi Gras in New Orleans hundreds of Prime Timers gather to celebrate life, freedom and each other. We now reserve an entire hotel just for Prime Timers. Keep an eye on our on-line PTWW Events page, since much more is being planned for our worldwide members, chapters, and affiliates.
Our organization is emerging as a leading force in the gay and bisexual communities, and while we are not a political organization, we are concerned with society as it effects the aging gay and bisexual population. As our organization grows, we will be leading the pack in seeking answers to the needs and problems of maturing gay and bisexual men. It is hoped that soon a Prime Timers Chapter will be in every major metropolitan area in the world.
