A Message from the President

Randy A

Last month’s meeting was spot-lighted by our annual election of the Prime Timer’s Board of Directors and Committee Chairs. Bill K did an awesome job as the Nominating Committee Chairman and in facilitating the election. I would like to thank everyone for your vote of confidence in electing me to the role of President of our organization. My congratulations to the other new board members in their new roles: Slade A (Vice-President); Steve H (returning Treasurer); Andy B (Secretary); Randy W (Hospitality Committee Chairman); Michael M (Membership Chairman); Jacob P (Program/Events Chairman); Dave C (Publicity/Newsletter Chairman); Wayne B (Special Events Chairman), and; Dave E and Chuck B (Members at Large).

We would be remiss not to thank the members of the 2009 board that are taking a well deserved "rest" this year: Stephen R (who served as both the Publicity/Newsletter and Membership Chairman), Nick K (Hospitality), and; Bob P and Roger K (Members-at-large). And we thank John M, our "retiring" president, who will be staying on the board in an advisory role.

Your new board has already been tossing around some interesting ideas for 2010 and it promises to be a "fun" year ahead! Many of you might not know, but our new Program/Events Chairman, Jacob P, is an accomplished Chef and is providing recipes for a new cook-book. While he will probably not personally be preparing our monthly meals (unless we can beg him to do that now and then), he sure knows how to throw a party and we will definitely be benefiting from his influence and notion of quality in food.

What makes the organization really great, though, has always been the interest group chairmen who have served tirelessly from year to year. I hope each of you will thank these men for the work they do to help us to continue to enjoy the fellowship and socializing. If you are a new member, please take advantage of the many groups we have to offer.

Here’s to a great 2010!

Gay Literature

Don B. & Roy H.

This group reads books by gay authors or about gay themes. We meet on the fourth Monday of most months at 7:30 pm for discussion and dessert.

In February we continue our discussion of the early 20th-century Bloomsbury Group of English writers, intellectuals, and artists. This fascinating set deeply influenced literature, art, philosophy, and economics as well as modern attitudes towards feminism, pacifism, and sexuality. Many of its members, including Virginia Woolf, John Maynard Keynes, E. M. Forster, and Lytton Strachey, were actively gay.

For February feel free to select any book that interests you written by any member of the Bloomsbury group.

Much information about the Bloomsbury Group can be found on the internet, and Don has put together several lists. He has a summary of the various participants and their relationships—sexual and otherwise—plus lists of books by and about members of the group.

Monday Night Euchre

Steve F.

Every Monday afternoon at 5:30 pm, we meet at Molly Malone’s for dinner and euchre. We play, break for dinner and then play more cards afterwards. If you want to learn to play or are a beginner, this is an especially good event to attend. We also teach three-handed or cut-throat euchre.

Tuesday Night Dinner/Movie

Steve F.

Every Tuesday evening at 5 pm, we meet at Cheddar’s on Houston Road in Florence (sandwiches under $5.50, entrees under $9.00) for some really tasty American food. Afterwards, we see a movie (choice of 12) for $1.75. For those of you intimidated by Art Films, these are first run movies shown by regular theaters. You must RSVP on Tuesday before 4 pm and arrive at Cheddar’s before 5 pm to be guaranteed a seat.

Wednesday Night Cinema

Steve F.

The Cinema Group meets every Wednesday for dinner and a movie. We usually meet at 6 pm for dinner at Olives (on Ludlow Ave.) in Clifton and then on to the Esquire Theater for a movie. Occasionally we change venues and have dinner and a movie in Mariemont. So, invite a friend and join us.

Cards & Games

Bob F. & Bill C.

The 25 or so PrimeTimers and their guests who attended the December Card Party hosted by Dave S and Bill P were unanimous in their praise of the wonderful time that they had. Everyone commented on the delicious spaghetti that you prepared, Bill. Thanks so much!!

Mike S has agreed to host the February Card party at his place in Loveland. He has promised to have his house all decorated for Valentine's Day. The festivities begin at 7:00 on Saturday, February 13.  Please remember to bring a goodie for the other guys to share. And, as always, it's BYOB.
